Not their backtest

Backtest the event, not 50 years of SPY.

Most backtests replay candles on one chart. OddsMaker tests the Trade Ideas events themselves, across every stock, on our own history.

  • Every Streaming Alert (Scanner) as it fired
  • Top Lists (Screeners) filters as the tape looked
  • Win rate, profit factor and net P&L, trade by trade

Traditional backtests

Chart history theater

Load SPY (or a watchlist) for decades. Fit indicators to candles. Pretty equity curves on the same old series everyone already ground to dust.

OddsMaker

Event-based. Tape-native.

Key point

Test the Trade Ideas events: Streaming Alerts (Scanner) as they fired, Top Lists (Screeners) filters as the tape looked, on TI’s own history. Same desk. Same database. Not a generic candle library.

Key point

Why we can do this: We can run OddsMaker because of our database technology. It stores every alert as it fired and the filter values at that moment. See the Data Difference.

OddsMaker results: profit factor, total trades, win rate and average winner and loser

Rain Man for the tape

How OddsMaker backtesting works

Pick the setup, set your exits, and OddsMaker replays every past time it fired across all stocks. Then it shows you the score.

  • Pick an alert, a Top List (Screener) or your own filters
  • Set entry times, targets, stops or a hold time
  • Replay every time it fired, across all stocks

Settings

Pick an alert or filter strategy, set your entry times and exits, and OddsMaker replays every past time that setup fired across all stocks, then reports win rate, average gain and profit factor (net winnings divided by net losses), and lists every trade behind them.

Settings

OddsMaker doesn’t ask “did RSI work on SPY since 1970?” It asks: when this alert fired under these filters, what happened next? Profit targets and stop losses in $ or %, set as a constant or a filter value such as Smart Stop, with optional Wiggle. Time of day. Multi-filter stacks. Then it zeros in.

Start from the event

Breakout, pressure, gap, pulse: the named alert is the trigger. You’re testing what traders actually see on the Channel Bar.

Stack the clues

Filters are the profiler work (relative volume, range, position in range and more), baked together, not dripped one at a time.

Lock the edge

Key point

Read the win rate and profit factor, then tighten the rules where the idea fell short. Holly speaks it; OddsMaker is the engine powering her.

  1. Pick the idea. Start from any Streaming Alert, a set of Top Lists (Screeners) filters, or your own filters built in the Formula Editor.
  2. Set the rules. Choose your entry window and your exits: a profit target and stop loss, a hold time, or an exit at a set time of day.
  3. Replay real events. Every time the alert fired or a stock met your filters becomes a test trade, across all US-listed stocks, not one chart.
  4. Read and tighten. Check the win rate and profit factor, break the test down, and run it again until it holds up.

Example setup: take the New High alert, add the Relative Volume filter set above 2, then test it with a profit target of +2% and a stop loss of −1%. OddsMaker lists every time that setup fired and what happened next.

Key point

Past results, including backtests, don’t guarantee future results.

The scoreboard

What a backtest shows you

Every test comes back with a scoreboard. You see the odds, every trade behind them, and where the idea works and where it leaks.

  • Win rate and profit factor for the whole test
  • Every trade behind the numbers, one double-click away
  • Breakdowns by time of day, price and symbol

  • Win rate and profit factor for the whole test, plus average winner and average loser.
  • Every trade behind the numbers. Double-click to list them and see the symbol, time and result.
  • Breakdowns on the Optimization tab by time of day, price and symbol, so you can see where an idea works and where it leaks.
  • Recent market events, not decades of index bars. You see what is often working now, across every stock.

The usual loop: duplicate the alert window, tighten a filter or move the entry time, and run OddsMaker again. When a strategy holds up, trade it live with Brokerage Plus or automate it with Money Machine.

That nightly loop is the same one you can run by hand: pick an idea, test it on recent events, keep what holds up and drop what doesn’t. No code, no spreadsheets.

You don’t grind a research paper. Holly AI gives you entry and exit signals backed by the stats, because the card counter already ran the shoe on Trade Ideas history. OddsMaker and Holly are both in TI Premium. Browse more tools on the features page and the stock scanners hub.

OddsMaker backtesting questions

What is backtesting in stock trading?

Backtesting runs a trading strategy against past market data to see how it would have performed before you risk money on it.

How is OddsMaker different from a normal backtester?

Most backtesters replay price bars on one chart or symbol. OddsMaker is event-based: it finds every past moment a Trade Ideas alert fired under your filters, across all stocks, and measures what happened next.

Can I backtest my own alerts and filters?

Yes. Any strategy you build from Trade Ideas alerts and filters can be tested, including custom filters you write in the Formula Editor.

What exit rules can I test?

Profit targets and stop losses in dollars or percent, set as a constant or as a filter value such as Smart Stop, with optional Wiggle. You can also exit after a set hold time or at a set time of day.

What results does OddsMaker show?

Win rate, average winner and loser, profit factor and number of trades. You can break results down by time of day, symbol and more, and double-click to list the individual trades.

Which plan includes OddsMaker?

OddsMaker is part of TI Premium. Holly AI runs similar tests on her own strategies every night and only sends signals for the strategies that pass. The AI Assistant can't send a window to OddsMaker yet, so you run tests from the OddsMaker window yourself.
